Coral Jewelry

Coral has been used as a gem since prehistoric times. As well, it has a history of religious meaning - being one of the seven treasures in Buddhist scriptures and thought to be a strong talisman against bleeding, evil spirits and hurricanes. Corals colour ranges from white to red, and it grows in branches that look like underwater tress. Most coral is found in the Mediterranean Sea or in the Pacific off Japan and Taiwan. Coral is formed by the deposition of the skeletons of microscopic animals called coral polyps. One of the distinctive features of coral is that it takes a perfect polish.

The most valuable colours of coral are red, black, and pink (angel skin coral). Black coral is exotic and dramatic and has long been considered to guard against misfortune. Pink coral is delicate and is said to bring good health. Red coral is best described as rich and romantic. It is much softer than other gem materials and needs to be stored carefully to avoid being scratched.

Jewelry made from coral is very popular. Due to its association with the Mediterranean, coral designs are often pared with shells and other marine materials.
