Gemstone QualityThe problem with gemstones is that the prices of them vary from $100 to $2,000,000 depending on the type of gemstone. When buying a gemstone experts suggest that one buy the best quality. For example, choose a smaller, better quality stone rather than a larger poorer quality. More well known gemstones (rubies, sapphires and emeralds) are more expensive gemstones than more recently discovered ones even though these new ones are just as beautiful. Gemstone quality and value are evaluated according to the "Four C's". These are colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. Colour is a key factor, however, contrary to common beliefs the darker the colour does not necessarily mean the better the quality of the stone. Colour can be too dark and make the gem appear more black than its proper colour. When a gem is too dark its colour is subdued and lifeless. A better way to tell if a gem is of good quality is to look for gems that are more brighter and rich and vivid in colour. A clear, medium-tone, very intense and saturated primary colour is most preferred. Clarity is also important. Clear, transparent gemstones with no visible flaws are the most valued. Anything that interrupts the clarity of the gem is called an inclusion and will affect the price of the gem. Surprisingly though, some gemstones are valued for their inclusions. Tiny inclusions in a gem can put the eye in the cats-eye and create the star in star sapphire. As well, inclusions can serve as birth marks, telling us where a particular gemstone is mined. A good cut is something that does not cost more but can add or subtract from the beauty of the gem. As well, cut gemstone reflects light back evenly across the surface area when held face up. If the cut is to deep or narrow then areas will look dark. If it is too shallow and wide, parts of the stone will be washed out and lifeless. To judge the best cut hold the gemstone up to others to compare. Gemstones are generally sold by weight, not size. The price will be per carat, which is one fifth of a gram. Some gems are heavier than others so the same weight stone may be a different size. In general, gemstone pricing within each variety should follow common sense - the more beautiful the gemstone is the more valuable it is. Related Link
