Caring for Nipple Jewelry
Complications:
Some complications that occur include:
- Infection of the nipple can occur and it can spread through the milk
ducts and into the lymph nodes under the arm.
- Scarring can occur.
- A cyst can grow in the nipple.
- If the jewelry in the piercing is too small hampered healing
can occur.
Caring for your Nipple Piercing:
It takes about 6 - 10 weeks for a pierced nipple to heal. It is important
to do the following:
- Don't touch or handle the piercing unnecessarily.
- Don't twirl or turn the jewelry unnecessarily for the first
month or so.
- Wash the nipple daily with anti-bacterial soap.
- Remove any drying secretions or crusts while bathing.
- Regularly bathe or immerse the nipple in warm salty water, but use
sea slat not iodized table salt.
- Pat the area dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
- Wash the nipple after swimming or doing exercise.
- During sleep or exercise, keep the jewelry in place and the piercing
intact by either covering it with sticking plaster or wearing a bra.
- Don't remove the jewelry before the wound has healed.
- If you develop pain, swelling, inflammation or yellow puss you should
see your doctor immediately. An infection can be treated with antibiotics.
