Caring for Pearls

It is important to remember that a Pearl is not a rock like a gemstone. Pearls can keep a beautiful lustre for centuries, when generations of owners remember to be careful with their pearls.

Proper care is not difficult, and it is merely a matter of remembering that these gems are organic by nature, grown in water from living cells. They require moisture, but because they are often worn on a silk string which will deteriorate over time when wet, pearls will need to be re-strung frequently if they are soaked in salt or fresh water. They are prone to damage from pollution and injury and they should be kept away from heat.

The rules of caring for pearls are as follows:

1) Pearls should be stored separately from other jewelry, in a cloth bag or a jewelry pouch. Storage in a slightly damp linen will keep pearls from drying out in a low humidity atmospheres - such as central heating.

2) Apply cosmetics, perfume and spray products first, and put pearls on after.

3) Remove spills immediately if pearls come in contact with food acids. Use a soft cloth and water, and dry them afterwards.

4) Wipe pearls after wear, using a soft cloth. Try to avoid commercial jewelry cleaners unless you are directed to.

5) Re-string pearls regularly, for the sake of the pearls and to avoid broken strings. Make-up, powder and grime will form on the string and these can attack the silk and pearls.

6) Replace individual pearls when a competent pearl stringer recommends it. Pearls that are worn lying against the skin will absorb acid from the skin and eventually lose lustre and shape.
