Caring for Platinum Jewelry

It is important to keep platinum jewelry clean and safe. It shouldn't be worn during tough work or while working with harsh chemicals. It should be stored in a fabric lined box away from other pieces in order to not be scratched. Platinum settings should be checked carefully as well to make sure that there are no damages to the prongs or bezels. If something is loose it should be brought to a professional immediately for repair.

Make sure that your platinum jewelry is insured, and if you are unsure of the value take it to your local jeweler for valuation.
It should be cleaned periodically to ensure its appearance. It should be cleaned the same way as you clean other jewelry - using a pre-packaged jewelry cleaner or soaking it in warm water and soap, then gently rubbing it with a soft cloth. As well, it should be professionally cleaned once in awhile - about every six months should be fine. Make sure the jeweler is qualified and has a platinum trained bench worker if you are having it adjusted, resized, polished or cleaned. If visible scratches appear take your platinum to a qualified jeweler.

Be aware that, over time, platinum will develop a natural patina that many people prefer over the "just polished" look. This can be buffed away to a shine again by a professional.
